Many of the large number of Bohemian immigrants who came to New York City in the 1860's through 1880's, including one branch of the Sismilich family, found themselves working as virtual indentured servants in the cigarmaking industry and living on the Lower East Side of Manhattan as "the teeming masses". The noted reformed Jacob Riis included a chapter about them in his famous turn of the century expose "How the Other Half Lives".
